North British Semigroups and Applications Network
NBSAN is a network of researchers in Scotland and Northern England with interests in semigroup theory and its applications. It is funded chiefly by a grant from the London Mathematical Society (with additional contributions from host departments and occasionally from other sources) and holds 2-3 meetings per year in different locations around the region. The main participant universities are East Anglia, Heriot-Watt, Manchester, St Andrews and York, but our activities are open to all interested researchers. Attendance at all meetings is free. We especially welcome graduate students.
To enquire about the network, or to join the mailing list, please contact the central coordinator Mark Kambites. For enquiries about individual meetings, please contact the relevant local organiser as described below.
Next Meeting
The 31st NBSAN meeting will be held at the University of Hull on Friday 20th March 2020, organised by Wolfram Bentz. The expected timetable is:
- 12:30 - Nouf Alqahtani (York) - Free idempotent generated semigroups over strong normal bands
- 13:30 - Ashley Clayton (St Andrews) - Title TBA
- 14:30 - Coffee break
- 15:30 - Carl-Fredrik Nyberg Brodda (East Anglia) - The B. B. Newman Spelling Theorem
- 16:30 - Peter J Cameron (St Andrews) - Complete mappings for groups and semigroups
Please contact Wolfram with any queries.
Funding is available to assist UK-based graduate students with their costs in attending NBSAN meetings; to apply for this please contact Mark Kambites in advance with an estimate of your expenses. Also, the LMS has a scheme to assist UK-based mathematicians with parental or caring responsibilities with extra caring costs incurred when attending meetings; details of this can be found here.
Future Meetings
The second meeting of 2019-20 will be held in York on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th June 2020. Speakers will include Tara Brough, Igor Dolinka, Ying-Ying (Ricky) Feng, Peter Higgins, Craig Miller, Tom Quinn-Gregson, Itamar Stein and Mária Szendrei. Please contact Victoria Gould for further information. The meeting will be followed in the same place by a three-day workshop on Topics in Geometric Semigroup Theory, organised by Nóra Szakács.
