NBSAN is a network of researchers in Scotland and Northern England with interests in semigroup theory and its applications. It is funded by grants from the London Mathematical Society and Edinburgh Mathematical Society, and organises about 3 meetings per year in different locations around the region. The main participant universities are Heriot-Watt, Manchester, St Andrews and York, but our activities are open to all interested researchers and we especially welcome participation by graduate students.

The next NBSAN meeting will be held in York on Wednesday 25th November 2009. The provisional timetable is:

11:45-12:25 (Roger Kirk Centre)Early arrivers meet for lunch
12:25-12:30 (Room P/X/001)Welcome
12:30-13:20 (Room P/X/001)Jim Renshaw (Southampton) - Adequate transversals of abundant semigroups
13:30-13:55 (Room P/X/001)Claire Cornock (York) - Structure theorems for proper restriction semigroups
14:00-14:15 (Physics Concourse)Coffee and Tea
14:15-14:40 (Room P/T/005)Lubna Shaheen (York) - Perfection for pomonoids
14:45-15:35 (Room P/T/005)Michael Hoffmann (Leicester) - Hyperbolic monoids
15:45-16:15 (Physics Concourse)Coffee and Tea
16:15-16:40 (Room P/T/005)Marianne Johnson (Manchester) - Tropical matrix algebra
16:45-17:35 (Room P/T/005)Nick Gilbert (Heriot-Watt) - Approaches to tiling semigroups

All talks are in the Physics and Electronics Building, but please note the change of room after the first coffee break. Here is some practical information on travelling to the University and the map of the Heslington Campus. For those able to stay after the meeting, we will be going out for an early dinner in the centre of York.

We have limited funding available to support the attendance costs of UK-based graduate students. If you would like to be considered for funding, please contact Mark Kambites with a rough estimate of your attendance costs.
