NBSAN is a network of researchers in Scotland and Northern England with interests in semigroup theory and its applications. It is funded by grants from the London Mathematical Society and Edinburgh Mathematical Society, and organises about 3 meetings per year in different locations around the region. The main participant universities are Heriot-Watt, Manchester, St Andrews and York, but our activities are open to all interested researchers and we especially welcome participation by graduate students.
The next meeting will be held in St Andrews on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th April 2009, organised by James Mitchell. The meeting will start at 13:00 on Thursday and finish around 15:00 on Friday. All talks are in the Maths Institute. The provisional schedule is as follows:
Thursday 16th April13:00 (Room 1A) | László Márki (Hungarian Academy of Sciences) - A matrix construction for certain inverse monoids with an application in universal algebra |
14:00 (Room 1A) | Mark Lawson (Heriot-Watt) - The Morita theory of regular semigroups |
15:00 | Coffee |
15:30 (Room 1A) | João Araújo (Lisbon) - Guess who |
16:30 (Room 1A) | Alan Cain (Lisbon) - Automaton semigroups |

15:00 | Close |
Early arrivers can look for James Mitchell in room 308 on the top floor of the Mathematics Institute; we will go for lunch at 12:00, and leave an indication of where. Here is some practical information on getting to St Andrews and a list of accommodation in St Andrews.
The third NBSAN meeting will be in Edinburgh some time in July 2009.
