Research allows me to expand my mind - or at least attempt to!

How would you summarise your research to undergraduates?

I am interested in mathematical modelling, whereby complex problems are translated into mathematical language to allow meaningful insight and prediction into their nature. In research my interests include financial regulation and glaciology.

What do you think makes the School distinctive?

The yellow walls.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

The fact it forces you to actually understand what it is you thought you previously knew!

What do you enjoy most about research?

Discovery, control and understanding. Research allows me to expand my mind - or at least attempt to!

What have been the highlights of your career?

Showing that subglacial lakes in Antarctica will flood,  explaining how banks can be made safer, and helping to explain the underlying causes of melt-rate dynamics of glaciers to field scientists.
