Mark Kambites obtained his first degree (2000) and PhD (2003) from the University of York. He held postdoctoral research positions in Canada (2003-05) and Germany (2005-06), before joining the School of Mathematics in Manchester as an RCUK Academic Fellow in 2006. In 2011, at the end of the fellowship, he became Senior Lecturer, and then in 2013 Reader in Pure Mathematics. He is the central organiser of the North British Semigroups and Applications Network, and since 2009 has served on the editorial board of the journal Communications in Algebra.
