The diversity of culture and the quality of the facilities are just two of the great things about the University.

Course: Mathematics (3 Years) [BSc]

Course dates: 2005 - 2008

Current occupation: Head of SEO at NetGiant Ltd

How did you secure your current position?

Shortly after leaving University, I landed a role as a Natural SEO (search engine optimisation) Programmer in July 2008 for a European internet marketing agency, Just Search Ltd. I promoted my CV on a few sites and went through recruitment consultants who set up an interview for me at the company.

With Just Search, I was a Natural SEO Programmer for two years and then a Senior SEO Developer for nine months. After that I left to work for another agency as a Senior SEO Consultant. After a month, I was called back to Just Search as their Digital Marketing Executive and then I was promoted to Social Media Manager. I left the company in 2012 to join NetGiant as their Head of SEO.

How has your qualification helped you in your career?

Studying Mathematics has assisted me greatly in my career so far in numerous ways, primarily in problem solving.  It's amazing how many problems you can face in your career. I come across problems on a daily basis in programming, project management, graphic design and even client meetings!

Studying Mathematics at Manchester improved my ability to diagnose problems with speed and efficiency. A large part of my job is to analyse thousands of lines of data which I'm required to come to meaningful conclusions about, and then present the results in a non-technical way that clients and colleagues can understand.

What is your greatest achievement to date?

The great amount skill I developed in a short time after leaving the University, at a professional and personal level. Also, achieving results on many competitive keywords for businesses on Google, and using them to increase a client’s revenue.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing a similar career route and what experience do you consider to be necessary?

There are many opportunities in the field of internet marketing. Every business needs to market online and a search engine is the first point of call for most people. According to trends, this will be the case for years to come. The industry is still developing and the opportunities are great. Whether you're studying mathematics, software engineering or business you have the potential to achieve great things in the industry.

What did you most enjoy about your time at Manchester?

The people. At Manchester, you’re surrounded by the best and friendliest. The diversity of culture and the quality of the facilities are just two of the great things about the University.

Why would you recommend the University as a good place to study?

In addition to the reputation the University has and the great city it's located in, the opportunities are unmatched. Studying at Manchester will open numerous doors for you. You will go there to study a particular degree but will be encouraged to achieve a lot more.
