The diversity of culture and the quality of the facilities are just two of the great things about the University.

Course: Mathematics (3 Years) [BSc]

Course dates: 2005 - 2008

Current occupation: Owner of Cr8iv Media

How did you secure your current position?

Shortly after graduating from Manchester in 2008, I secured a role as a Natural SEO (search engine optimisation) Programmer for Just Search Ltd, a reputable European marketing firm. I achieved this by distributing my CV via several job sites, such as Monster and University's very own career service. I was soon approached by a recruitment consultant who facilitated an interview with the company.

I continued in this role at Just Search for two years, until I was made Senior SEO Developer. After a short time I was promoted again to Digital Marketing Executive, and later to Social Media Manager. In 2012 I left Just Search to join NetGiant, an online office retail company, as their Head of SEO. After gaining a wealth of experience in this role, devising strategies and leading projects, I decided to set up my own firm, Cr8iv Media, in 2013.

I'm happy to report that business is healthy, and we have quickly established a wide and varied client list in the short time we have been up and running.

How has your qualification helped you in your career?

Studying Mathematics greatly developed my problem solving skills, and I utilise these on a daily basis. I didn't realise until I left university quite how universally transferable these skills are, and I often rely on them to overcome a number of obstacles, whether it's to do with programming, project management, graphic design, or even scheduling.

My studies in this field also improved my ability to accurately diagnose problems with speed and efficiency. In my line of work, I am required to analyse thousands of lines of data and translate these into meaningful conclusions, before presenting results in an accessible way which clients and colleagues can understand.

What is your greatest achievement to date?

The great amount of skill I developed in a short time after leaving the University, at a professional and personal level. Also, achieving results on many competitive keywords for businesses on Google, and using them to increase a client’s revenue.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of pursuing a similar career route and what experience do you consider to be necessary?

Internet marketing is a growing industry bursting with opportunities. Every business needs an online presence. A search engine is the first port of call for most people, and there is ample research to suggest that this will be the case for years to come.

The industry is still developing, so there are great opportunities for people who like to do things their own way and think outside the box. Whether you're studying mathematics, software engineering or business, there's plenty of room for new people in the industry to innovate and contribute in their own unique manner.

What did you most enjoy about your time at Manchester?

Definitely the people. At Manchester, you’re surrounded by the finest and friendliest the country has to offer. The diversity of culture and the quality of the facilities are just two of the great things about the University.

Why would you recommend the University as a good place to study?

In addition to the prestigious reputation the university has and the great city it's located in, the opportunities are unmatched. Studying at Manchester will open numerous doors for you. Even though you might go there to study a particular degree, you will be encouraged to try new things, and achieve even more than you thought you could.
