Persistent Homology without Hand-waving

Zoltan Kocsis (The University of Manchester)

Persistent homology can determine certain topological properties of embedded submanifolds of Euclidean space from a sample of finitely many points. Unfortunately, many talks on persistent homology gloss over the mathematical details and focus on applications to science, industry, or medical research. Here we provide a gentle but rigorous introduction to the subject, directing our attention to results and theorems that interest pure mathematicians. No prior knowledge of homology theory is assumed.
