Wave propagation in periodic heterogeneous media: transient effects and band gap tuning

The propagation of waves in complex materials is a hot topic in materials engineering and physics. Periodic structures are of particular interest since they can exhibit interesting behaviour such as stop/pass band frequencies and negative refractive indices. In the first half of this talk we discuss the transient behaviour of waves in a one dimensional periodic structure, namely a string with periodically spaced masses. In the second half of the talk we discuss stop bands in two dimensional periodic structures and their tunability by applying a nonlinearly elastic prestress.
