Growth functions of algebras and subalgebras

Yuri Bahturin (Memorial)

Frank Adams 1,

We explore the relationship between the growth of algebras and the growth of their subalgebras. We study, in particular, the distortion, an interesting feature of topologic origin. A subalgebra is embedded in an algebra with distortion when the degrees of its elements with respect to the generating sets of the subalgebra are much bigger than the degrees with respect to the generating sets of the whole algebra. The techniques used include not necessarily commutative Groebner bases. We will mention a connection with the questions of computability. (This talk is based on joint papers with Alexander Olshansky.)
