Standing on a small grassy knoll near The Torus, Mike finally put his phone away. "I don't think Ellie needed to make the code quite that hard", he said to himself. He set off back towards The Torus to follow Ellie's instructions on getting back inside.
It didn't take long for him to spot the open window on the first floor. Climbing up the tree proved slightly more challenging than he first thought ("Finally a practical use for those PE lessons!" he realised) and was soon back inside TimeSucker's headquarters.
He quickly realised that The Torus was still in lock-down. Every corridor seemed to be patrolled by a security guard and every door seemed to be locked. As he walked down one of the few empty corridors, a door opened. There was no way of avoiding capture and Mike started to panic.
"Mike, you idiot, it's me!" whispered Ellie from inside the open door. "Get in here."
Ellie briefed Mike on what she had learned. "It's clear that Suri is getting rid of his senior staff and Dr C is next. But why?" she pondered.
Mike told her about the car accident that had taken out Dr B. "It wasn't just an accident. Dr B wasn't in control. Somebody tampered with the car before and I wonder who?" he said.
"Whatever is going on, we need to warn Dr C before it's too late", said Ellie. "Come on, I'm sure we can sneak around and find their office."
Even evading security, it did not take long for Mike and Ellie to find an office marked 'Dr Casey Easley. Head of Research in Medical Data and Health Sciences'. They knocked cautiously. "Nobody in," said Mike. Ellie opened the door, peered inside the office and then quickly turned to Mike, blanching as she did so. "I think we're too late," she said.
Dr C was collapsed at a desk in the corner of the room, face down on a computer keyboard. Dr C's left sleeve was rolled up and a hypodermic syringe lay discarded to one side. Ellie checked the researcher's vital signs. "Thank goodness ... still breathing", she said quietly. Mike looked down and noticed an intriguing display on the computer. He moved the mouse but nothing happened. "Ellie! I think there's a message here but the computer has frozen!"
Ellie glanced over. "Don't worry. I think we can crack that by hand."
