"Quick! Let's get out of here while we still can!" shouted Ellie as they ran back to the entrance foyer of The Torus.
The could see the main doors closing. "Let's run!" shouted Mike, as he sprinted through the crowds in the foyer. The thick glass entrance doors were closing, moving slowly due to their size and weight. He got to them just in time to squeeze through. He heard the doors slam behind him, and turned to see Ellie on the other side of the door, trapped inside. Ellie mouthed the word 'RUN!' to him, and he ran down the road, away from The Torus.
Ellie watched Mike recede into the distance. "It looks like I'm not going anywhere for a while", she said to herself, "so I may as well try to find out what's going on here. One of the scientists tried to warn me something is wrong – but was it Dr B or Dr C?" She sat down on one of the sofas and opened up Alex Hopper's tablet.
The tablet appeared completely inactive. As Ellie tried every trick to turn it on, she noticed two familiar faces on the other side of the foyer arguing. One was Tiedo Suri, the other was Dr Bayan Al-Mahmali - or Dr B. Ellie strained her ears whilst trying to look insoucient, but she could only hear parts of what were said. "The project is too important..." she heard Suri say. Ellie could see Bayan nodding at some of what Suri said, but vehemently disputing other points. Finally, Suri put one hand up and Ellie heard him say "The whims of one person cannot be allowed to derail us!" as Bayan turned and stormed off.
As Ellie wondered what that was about, Dr Casey Easley – Dr C – approached her and sat down. "Hello Ellie", said Casey, grinning a forced smile. "This must be a bit of a shock to you. Let me tell you some of the other research we do at TimeSucker.
Casey explained how TimeSucker had grown from Tiedo Suri's 'Gimmee Coffee!!' app. This app suggested the best place to go for a coffee based on information about queues and any special offers in local cafes. "As we introduced more features, tracking people's preferences and a messaging service, it grew into TimeSucker: a huge social media company with billions of subscribers", explained Casey. "We thought we could do some good with the data", said Casey and explained how TimeSucker, along with many other companies were using big data to create and improve many algorithms. "Big data doesn't just mean 'lots of data'", Casey said, making exaggerated air quotes. "You could also think of it as 'messy data'. If you're doing something easy such as collecting data on people's height or weight then it's pretty clear what the data is measuring. But take my work on precision medicine or Dr B's work on self-driving cars: we're not just gathering large amounts of data, it's data that is affected by many other factors and then we want to make statistical inferences based on that data. The mathematics and computing power needed to sort this out is quite considerable and improving every day."
Ellie let Dr C continue the explanation of data science, thinking that Mike would also have enjoyed hearing this.
Mike, now out of breath, was walking down the tree-lined avenue that led away from The Torus. As he wondered how best he could get back to help Ellie, he heard the revving of a car engine behind him. He turned and saw a black car, emblazoned with the TimeSucker logo and festooned with cameras and digital equipment, accelerating along the avenue, with an agitated driver inside.
"Whoever that is really wants to escape from TimeSucker!" thought Mike as the car sped past him and disappeared around a corner in the road. Seconds later, he heard loud bang. Mike rushed to the corner as fast as his protesting lungs would allow him. The car had hit a large tree and looked the worse for it. The front bonnet was open and steam was pouring out. Approaching the car, Mike saw Dr Bayan Al-Mahmali – Dr B – passed out, with a large bruise already starting to form.
Mike reached into the car, noting the array of multi-coloured controls on the dashboard. He reached for the ignition, wanting to make sure that the car wouldn't explode. "That's odd", he said, when he realised that all of the car's systems had already been switched off, save for one red light. "Somebody must have beaten me here. I wonder where they went?"
On the passenger seat was a folded piece of paper, advertising TimeSucker's car. "Who was this meant for?" Mike wondered.
