"Ellie!" Mike shouted across the school computer room as his friend walked in. "Why haven't you accepted my buddy request on TimeSucker? You've missed all the chirps we've been sending and the smuggies we've been posting. Everybody is on it."
Ellie looked dismissively at Mike. "Everybody? I don't think so. I'm not on it for a start. Smuggies? Photos of people gurning at their phones? That's not for me. Anyway, haven't you seen the news about TimeSucker?"
"About the data leak?" said Mike. "So what if 500 million people's login details, email addresses and passwords were stolen. TimeSucker is the greatest social media company on the planet and Tiedo Suri is a genius!"
"Social media?" said Ellie, giving Mike a withering look. "It isn't 2015 anymore. Tiedo Suri may have built TimeSucker up from just one small app, but there's no way the company can survive this. I'm not interested."
Mike clicked around on the computer. "I think you will be soon", he said. "TimeSucker have launched a competition to get some good publicity: the first people to find and solve a hidden code will win a tour of their amazing new building 'The Torus' and the chance to meet Tiedo Suri himself!"
Ellie face lit up. "And we are good at cracking codes. What do we have to do?"
"It's easy. There are 6 puzzle pieces hidden on TimeSucker's website. I've already found 5." Mike spun the computer monitor around. "And I've just found the 6th!"
Ellie looked at the screen and smiled. "I think we can win this. Mike: print each of those out!" she said.
Deep inside a doughnut-shaped building a tall, thin man, in his mid-30s and dressed in his signature white chinos and black sweater, turned away from his computer screen. He swept back his prematurely white hair, steepled his fingers and twitched his lips in a barely perceptible smile as he addressed the scientist in front of him.
"Thank you for coming. I'll keep this brief. The current situation necessitates that I talk to you in person.", his noise wrinkled as if it had encountered something noxious. "Each of my heads of research, you included, has been set a particular goal to achieve. There will be severe, permanent, consequences for you if you fail in this."
On the man's computer, a large red camera lens flickered unnoticed.
