MATH 42122/MATH62122 Galois Theory: Course Information for 2012/2013
Lecturer: Prof Ralph Stöhr
General information about this course can be found here.
The exposition of the material will closely follow the main recommended text book,
- E. Artin, Galois Theory, Dover Publications 1998,
- I. Stewart, Galois Theory, 3rd edition, Chapman and Hall,
- J. B. Fraleigh, A First Course in Abstract Algebra, 7th edition, Addison-Wesley,
are suggested for supplementary reading and, most importantly, as a source for examples (as there are only few examples in Artin's book). These books are rather expensive, but any edition of them will do and a number of copies is available in the library.
Lectures: Wednesday 9-11 am, AT G108
Tutorial: Friday 11-12 am, AT 107
Coursework Test: There will be a 1 hour in-class test on Friday, April 19, 2013, at 11 am in AT G107 (the usual tutorial slot). This is the week after the Easter break.
Notes for the course are available here.
