Student Representation and Feedback

‌The School aims to offer high qualty of teaching and learning experiences for its students.  The students feedback on the quality of teaching, their learning experiences and processes in the School are important as they help the School to identify areas of improvements. 

Feedback is done through a number of channels.

  • Student representation and submitting feedback

The School elects a team of Student Representatives that are appointed at the start of each academic year and attend the Schools Student Forum and Staff Student Liaison Committee. Students are also put forward to represent on other committees relevant to their studies, for example the School Board, the Teaching Committee and the Programme Committees.

Any student can submit feedback on their studies by completing the on-line feedback form below. This is then presented to the student representatives present at the next Schools Student Forum for discussion and will be reported back via the student representative and the Student Support Officer.

  • Committee structures

The Schools Student Forum meets fortnightly and provides opportunity for all taught students to raise problems they are having with their studies. The Forum is chaired by the Student Support Officer therefore no academic staff members are normally present. Student Reps attend each meeting but any other taught students of the School are welcome to attend to raise issues affecting the student body directly. Dates and venue for the 2018/19 meetings.

The Staff Student Liaison Committees meet once a semester providing a forum for staff and all taught students to discuss matters related to teaching, learning and student support.  The undergraduate and postgraduate committee comprise the Head of School, the Head of School Administrator, PSS teaching and learning staff, academic staff members and elected student representatives. The Committees are chaired by the Director of Studies at undergraduate and postgraduate level. 

The Teaching Committee oversees the provision of all taught programme curriculum in the School.  It is responsible for making decisions on which course units should be offered and monitors the content.  The Teaching Committee usually meets five times a year.

The School Board is the official body for monitoring academic activities. It is responsible for advising the Head of School on academic matters, in addition to a range of other matters affecting life in the School.  The School Board usually meets four times a year.

  • Student feedback questionnaires

The School aims to offer teaching of high quality.  Therefore all members of staff are required to distribute Week 3 Student Questionnaires to identify any serious problems with the lecture course and put provisions in place to correct the problems early in the semester.

The University, supported by the School, provides Online Course Unit Surveys for each course unit in week 10 and 11 of each semester. The unit surveys are available in Blackboard via My Manchester and promotional QR links. The results are reviewed at the Quality Management Panel and the Teaching Committee, copies of the review data is available below. You can also view responses from lecturers on students comments from previous surveys. You can access the feedback from lecturers from the Study Module(s) (MATHS1000; MATHS2000; MATHS3000; MATHS4000).

The National Student Survey (NSS) is an annual survey of final year students across the UK. The School encourages students to take part in this influencial survey to make their opinions heard. The feedback is important as the results are published onine to help prospective students to decide where to study, and are also used to identify areas of improvement. The survey takes a few minutes to complete and runs from January to April.    

  • Feedback on assessment and examinations

The non-compensatable mathematics year one course units are supported by Feedback Supervisions. A small group of students meet with a member of staff each week to discuss the lecture material and example sheets for the course unit. Students are asked to submit solutions to the examples sheets each week to the supervisor, who will then mark them, feedback and help with any difficulties.

  • Feedback Tutorials are associated with the majority of course units. In feedback tutorials lecturers provide example sheets to the students (usually on-line) and in the tutorial class the tutors help students with any questions they may have. The lecturer may also work through examples in the class.

The majority of mathematics course units have a coursework element, which usually counts towards the assessment of the course unit.  The coursework can take various forms; it can consist of a short test in class during the semester, or a piece of homework or it may take the form of an assessed computer practical or a project. The lecturer will mark the work and Feedback results and comments within 15 working days. 

  • Examination results are released via the student system. All students are expected to discuss their performance with their Academic Advisor during their regular meetings.  

Examination Feedback

Following each exam period the School provides the opportunity for students to view their scripts at an arranged Examination Feedback session.  Students can also access generic examination feedback written by lecturers, the past paper and scaling information.
