The course unit unit aims to provide a basic course in calculus and algebra to students in Foundation studies with AS-level mathematics or equivalent.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:Be familiar with simple algebra, functions, differentiation, integration and series

Intellectual skills:Be able to carry out routine operations involving the topics in the syllabus

Transferable skills and personal qualities:Have a set of tools and methods that can be applied in the courses given in the host department or in subsequent years.

Quizzes during tutorials in weeks 3, 5, 7, 9, 11. Best 4 marks taken. Weighting within unit 20%

Coursework : (week 10). Weighting within unit 10%

2 hour examination. Weighting within unit 70%


Seven lectures : Algebra and Functions.Functions and Inverse Functions. Polynomials, rational functions, trigonometric and inverse trigonometric, logarithms and exponentials. Solutions of quadratic, polynomial and trigonometric equations. Partial Fractions.

Five lectures: Differentiation. Definition. Standard Derivatives. Product, quotient and 'function of a function' rules. Stationary points. Higher derivatives.

Six lectures: Integration. Definition as reverse of differentiation. Definite integrals and areas under curves. Standard integrals. Integration by substitution (u=f(x)). Integration by parts. Integration by partial fractions.

Four lectures: Series.Arithmetic, geometric and binomial series. Infinite series and convergence. Taylor and Maclaurin series.
