The 1st British-French waves meeting, entitled "MATHmONDES" took place at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Techniques Avancees from 1st-2nd June 2004. The motivation for this meeting was that although both the British and French academic communities have a long and successful history of research in phenomenological and theoretical aspects of wave mechanics, in recent times the interests of both parties have diverged and thus the working relationship between the two groups is not as strong as it should be. Since both nations have distinct strengths it is thought that collaboration will be of mutual interest.
The focus of the meeting will be to discuss any activity relating to wave mechanics, ranging from functional analysis, through perturbation methods and transform techniques to hybrid and advanced numerical approaches. The aim of the meeting is to bring together British and French based researchers in order to exchange ideas and encourage collaboration. A number of interactions were initiated from the first meeting in 2004 and it is hoped that this second meeting will strengthen this collaboration and encourage further ties.
In particular at this meeting we have timetabled discussion of how PhD students and younger researchers can benefit from collaboration via mutual visits and the like.
The organisers can now announce that costs of registration, accommodation and travel for approximately 25 UK-based academics, postdoctoral fellows and postgraduates are covered by generous support from EPSRC and the Manchester Institute for Mathematical Sciences. Accommodation and registration for approximately 15 French-based academics, postdoctoral fellows and postgraduates is also covered. For travel costs for French-based participants please contact Dr Anne-Sophie Bonnet-BenDhia at Anne-Sophie.Bonnet-Bendhia@ensta.fr .
Money will be allocated on a first come first served basis. We will indicate to you at least two weeks before the meeting whether or not we can fully support your attendance and if not will indicate the estimated cost.
Please note that the international conference, Waves 2007, a further collaboration between French and British researchers will be held in Reading, UK from 23rd-27th July 2007. See the Waves 2007 website for the details. A first call for papers has just been announced.

The provisional programme is listed below and the format of talks will be given nearer the time of the meeting. It is expected that speakers will be allocated 30 minutes for their talk and any questions. Due to time limitations there are clearly restrictions on the possible number of talks and we wish to have an even split between French and UK based researchers together with a good distribution of talks over different areas. Please indicate on the registration form below if you would like to give a talk (together with a title) and we will let you know if you are giving a talk at least two weeks before the conference.

The University of Manchester has played an important role in the development of wave mechanics and applied mathematics in general for well over a century. Notable members of the University have included Horace Lamb, Osborne Reynolds, Lewis Fry Richardson, Sydney Goldstein, Alan Turing, James Lighthill and Fritz Ursell.
MATHMONDES 2 will take place in the Chancellors Hotel & Conference Centre, a self-contained high quality conference facility run by the University of Manchester. It is set in its own large grounds on the Fallowfield campus of the University, some 3 miles south of the main campus. Chancellors offers an ideal venue for intensive meetings and workshops.
