GDR Workshop on "Waves in pre-stressed nonlinear media"Losehill Hall, Castleton, Peak District, 7th-8th January 2009 |
Thanks to the support of the UK-French Groupe de Recherche (GDR) Ondes (waves) network, a workshop solely devoted to the analysis of waves in pre-stressed nonlinear media was held on 7th-8th January 2009, held at Losehill Hall in the beautiful Peak District national park about 20 miles away from Manchester. The venue is residential and allowed us all to be in one place for the 2 day workshop, including accommodation and meals. This atmosphere was conducive for good discussion!
I would like to thank all of the participants for their support of the workshop. In particular I would like to thank the speakers for their talks which were all of a very high standard.

The workshop focused on state-of-the-art theoretical research as well as application areas such as rubbery media and biological tissues.

As advised above it would be preferable to travel in order to arrive on the evening of the 6th January.
To get to Losehill hall, it is advisable to get the train to "Hope station". Local services to Hope run from Sheffield (25 min journey) and Manchester Piccadilly (45 min journey) stations, with a slightly more regular service from Sheffield. For more details see the national rail service website.
If flying from abroad it is likely that you will land at Manchester airport. You can then take local train services to Hope station (Manchester airport to Manchester Piccadilly and then on to Hope). If travelling by Eurostar, you should be able to travel to Sheffield from London St Pancras directly and then catch a local train from Sheffield to Hope.
If you need any advice about the best travel options, just email me (william.parnell@manchester.ac.uk).
If you need any assistance at the time regarding transport we can arrange lifts, taxis, etc. if you give advance warning of this requirement. In particular we can arrange lifts from Hope station to the venue if you let us know what time you are going to arrive at Hope station.
Finally, detailed directions to Losehill hall are given on the website.
