MATH 42122/MATH62122  Galois Theory: Course Information for 2012/2013

Lecturer:  Prof  Ralph Stöhr

General information about this course can be found here.

The exposition of the material will closely follow the main recommended text book,

- E. Artin, Galois Theory, Dover Publications 1998,

a classical text on Galois Theory. The book is available from Blackwell's online at £ 8.99 and from Amazon at £ 8.09, excellent value for money. The other two recommended textbooks,

- I. Stewart, Galois Theory, 3rd edition, Chapman and Hall,

- J. B. Fraleigh, A First Course in Abstract Algebra, 7th edition, Addison-Wesley,

are suggested for supplementary reading and, most importantly, as a source for examples (as there are only few examples in Artin's book). These books are rather expensive, but any edition of them will do and a number of copies is available in the library.
