Overview
Particle size segregation has a long history in industrial processes where
de-mixing of powders is of considerable practical importance. Experiments
in rotating containers, granular piles and shaken granular beds have revealed
amazingly ordered segregation patterns in certain regimes and chaotic behaviour
in others. Yet despite half a century of research into mixing and segregation
many of the mechanisms are not well understood and much of the theory relies on
relatively simple mathematical models.
The aim of this meeting is to bring together the whole granular flow community,
from mathematics, physics, engineering, chemical engineering and geophysics,
to discuss these issues. The overall objective will be to improve
our understanding of the fundamental physical processes at work, as well as
their description in both theoretical and computational models.

Organisation
The meeting will be held at
St. Martin's College in the historic City of Lancaster , which is ideally
placed for visits to Morecambe Bay, the Lake District , the Yorkshire Dales
and the Solway Firth. The conference will start on Sunday 11th August 2002 with
an evening meal and "ice-breaker". Seminars will start first thing
on Monday morning and the meeting will end during the afternoon of
Friday 16th August 2002.
