The talk will describe the development of adaptive space mesh and time step codes for parabolic and hyperbolic p.d.e.s. The general approach used will be based on the method of lines with adaptive spatial meshes and timestepping. The emphasis will be on the use of finite volume methods in space and on the solution of convection-reaction-diffusion problems. The talk will be illustrated by a number of realistic physical examples from gas dynamics, shallow water equations, combustion and atmospheric dispersion.
The talk will conclude with an assessment of the present situation in three space dimensions on unstructured tetrahedral meshes using parallel computers.
