Manchester Applied Mathematics and Numerical Analysis Seminars
Lecture Theatre OF/B9 Oddfellows Hall (Material Science)
This talk will establish a mathematical relationship between two physically distinct free boundary problems of classical interest. First, a new mathematical approach to the problem of steady free surface Euler flows with surface tension will be presented and the classic exact solutions for capillary water waves of Crapper (JFM, (2), 1957) retrieved in a novel fashion. New classes of exact solution to closely-related problems will be derived. A mathematical connection with the quite distinct physical problem of steady free surface Hele-Shaw flows with surface tension will then be discussed, and a wide class of new exact solutions to the latter problem also derived.
