Alfred Gray finished his undergraduate work at the University of Kansas
in 1960; then in 1964 he received a Ph.D from UCLA. After a four-year stint
at the University of California, Berkeley, he moved to the University of
Maryland, where he has been professor since 1970. His main research interest
is differential geometry (about 100 papers), although he has also written
a few papers on complex variables, and more recently about Mathematica.
His previous two books are "Tubes" (Addison-Wesley, 1990) and "Modern
Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces" (CRC Press, 1993).
The latter has been translated into Spanish, German, Japanese and Italian,
and the Educom people found it good enough to present him with a
distinguished software award in 1993. Alfred Gray is a foreign member of the
Belgian and Galician academies of science, as well as the usual
mathematical societies, and helps edit several journals. When he has free time, he enjoys listening to opera and traveling in Italy, Spain and Mexico.
