The Monkey Saddle is the surface given by z = x^3 - 3x y^2

This saddle has a place for a tail as well as legs---there are saddles with any number of places for tails!

We show the Monkey Saddle coloured by:
Mean curvature (left) and Gaussian curvature (right)

Mean Curvature tells us how the surface is fitted into 3-space---as viewed from outside.
Gaussian Curvature tells us how the surface curves intrinsically---as seen by a surface inhabitant.
