The cellular pattern that provides a background to these WWW pages is taken from a simulated detonation smoke-foil, as calculated using the Stewart-Yao equation derived in "On the dynamics of multi-dimensional detonation" published in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics (1996) vol 309, pp 225-275. The shading in the image corresponds to the pressure exerted on a thin foil lining in a tube that contains a combustible gas mixture as a detonation passes; darker shades represent higher pressure. The cellular pattern is recorded as a detonation propagates from left to right.
