My preferred email address is d.silvester (at) manchester.ac.uk
I am the Head of Applied Mathematics and I am in the Numerical Analysis group.
I am a member of the EPSRC peer review college and I coordinate the EPSRC research network on Numerical Algorithms and High Performance Computing. I am also a faculty advisor for the Manchester student chapter of SIAM.
I have supervised a number of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers over my academic career. A full list of publications is included in my on-line CV. Please refer to my BiBTeX database if you want to cite my work. You can check out my highly cited papers using either Google Scholar or Researcher ID. I like to broadcast stuff using Twitter and I am fascinated by the trends reported on my Twylah page.

Check out the May 2012 release of our Incompressible Flow & Iterative Solver Software (IFISS) Matlab and Octave toolbox. This is an open source software package that was originally associated with the book Finite Elements and Fast Iterative Solvers with applications in incompressible fluid dynamics

The book provides an introduction to finite elements, iterative linear solvers and scientific computing aimed at graduates in engineering, numerical analysis, applied mathematics and interdisciplinary scientific computing. The technically demanding theoretical aspects are largely confined to the sections on the 'Theory of errors'. You can check out the contents from here using Google books.

Readers who would like a more gentle introduction to the mathematics underlying finite element convergence theory will find it useful to assimilate the material in our Finite Element Primer before reading the first chapter.
