Entry requirements
Our entrance requirements, and the offer we make to you, are designed to ensure that you have the necessary background knowledge, together with the ability and commitment to do well on the course. Applications for all our first degree programmes should be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).
A/AS-levels
You must obtain grade A in mathematics A-level, together with one of the following:
a) If you are taking Further Mathematics A-level, we will typically ask for grades AB in this and one other A-level (making an AAB offer altogether).
b) If you are taking Further Mathematics AS-level, our typical offer asks for grade A in this, and grades AB in two other A-levels (as well as the grade A in Mathematics). In addition, you must obtain grade AB in the units C3 and C4 in any order.
c) If you are not taking any Further Mathematics, we will normally ask for grade A in each of two other A levels (making an AAA offer altogether). In addition, you must obtain grade A in each of the units C3 and C4.
If you obtain A* in Maths we can lower the grade requirement in your 3rd A-level, e.g. offering A*AB if you are not doing Further Maths
Please note that there are also separate English language requirements.
If you are applying for the BSc Mathematics with a Modern Language (UCAS code G1R9), we will ask for a language qualification in the 'required language' as part of your offer.
Note that we do not include General Studies in any offer. In place of the third A-level, we will normally accept a pass in the core of the Welsh Baccalaureate or (exceptionally) two AS-levels with grades AB or better.
Scottish qualifications
You must obtain grade A in Advanced Highers in Mathematics. In addition, we will typically ask for grade A in each of two other Advanced Highers, or grades AAAB in four Highers, or some equivalent combination of Advanced Highers and Highers with top grades.
For G1R9, you will need (as part of the above) the required language at grade A in Advanced Highers.
International Baccalaureate
Typically we ask for 36 points overall; of these 18 or more should be at Higher Level, including 6 in Mathematics, and also including (for G1R9 only) 6 in the relevant modern language.
Other qualifications
Please enquire for details if you are taking the European or French Baccalaureates, German Abitur, Cypriot Apolytirion or other national examinations. Alternative qualifications such as BTEC and Vocational A-levels are also acceptable, usually in combination with some A-levels.
Mature students
We welcome applications from mature students; we would look for evidence that you were able to achieve success on a demanding full-time course. You may find it helpful to contact an Admissions Tutor for advice before submitting an application through UCAS.
Deferred Entry
Some students benefit from a year away from academic work between school and university. Applications for deferred entry are considered equally to other applications up to the point of confirmation. Deferred entry is granted on the discretion of admissions staff, and is normally granted for one year only and 2 years at the maximum. Some English Language test results, such as IELTS or TOEFL, are only valid for two years from the test date.
