English language entry requirements
All entrants must have an approved English language qualification, which can be one of several possibilities. Internatioal applicants should have an IELTS or equivalent (see below). Home applicants require a grade C or above in GCSE English or a Scottish Certificate of Education English at grade C in Standard Grade or grade D in Higher Grade, or with International Baccalaureate English at grade 4 in Higher Level or at grade 5 in Standard Level.
Please contact the admissions staff for advice if you have, or are taking, an alternative qualification.
The requirement for our Single-Honours degrees represents the basic acceptable level of English. The higher requirements for G1N2, G1N3, G1R9, GN12, NG31 and GV15 are necessary because of the considerable reading and essay writing these degree programmes involve.
For a Single-Honours degree (G100, G104, GGC3, GG13, G1NH and G1NJ):
IELTS 6.0 overall (with at least 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in each other component)
For G1N2, G1N3, GN12, NG31 and GV15:
IELTS 6.5 overall (with at least 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in each other component)
IELTS 7.0 overall (with at least 6.0 in each component)
The University of Manchester also has a dedicated Language Centre offering both pre-sessional English language provision and in-sessional support
