Louis is currently completing a Student Experience Internship before beginning his 3rd year. He is working in the School of Chemical Engineering.
When applying to any internship it is vital to understand exactly what you are applying to. Knowing the project aims and the background material is invaluable.
Can you give a brief description of your role within the School of Chemical Engineering?
Through this internship I have been simulating the adsorption of perfluorohexane onto activated carbon using the Monte Carlo molecular simulator, Towhee. I have had to extrapolate the correct parameters for the input files from a different model.
How do you think the internship has helped you in your degree and future career?
This internship has given me a strong confidence to learn computing languages. I have only been using UNIX, although the skill of learning one language is highly transferable to another. Computing is a prominent part of any applied maths, so being at a confident stage will definitely be benefical when starting my future career.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying to an internship and what skills/experience do you think are necessary to be successful in your application?
When applying to any internship it is vital to understand exactly what you are applying to. Knowing the project aims and the background material is invaluable. Dedication is one of the most important skills to have; when applying to jobs there will always be some rejections, and having the motivation and dedication to persevere is the only thing that will let you mould your career path.
Is there anything you wish you’d done before the placement to help you prepare for either the application process or the work itself?
Learnt more about the software I would be using – that was very time consuming.
What was the highlight of your internship and your biggest achievement within the role?
Both the highlight and biggest achievement was receiving results which are genuinely useful.
Is there any other interesting information about your internship that you’d like to include?
I had the oppourtunity to get an insight into post doctorates and doctorates working environments and first hand information about their experiences as researchers.
