How many internships did you apply for before you were successful?
How do you think the internship has helped you in your degree and future career?
This internship came with a huge learning curve. One is expected to be able to pick up new skills in programming and apply them almost immediately. Interestingly, I thought this role would be better suited to a computer scientist, but transportation science is a discrete maths problem best suited to a mathematician. I have broken through to a few more companies, building an interesting group of hard working contacts and I have chosen my third year modules with a lot more knowledge about what is in demand in industry; aiming to develop those skills.
Is there anything you wish you’d done before the placement to help you prepare for either the application process or the work itself?
Better grades in first year would have certainly helped.
What was the highlight of your internship and your biggest achievement within the role?
The hard part about my internship was I was aware I wasn’t going to make much progress. The nature of my role is incredibly specialised mathematics that somebody doing their masters or a PhD would be looking to engage with. However, the skills I have gained in php, java, MATLAB/OCTAVE and web development are priceless.
