Unit specification

Aims
The programme unit aims to provide a basic course in calculus and algebra to students with AS-level mathematics or equivalent in schools / units of Foundation Studies
Brief description
Seven lectures : Algebra and Functions.Functions and Inverse Functions. Polynomials, rational functions, trigonometric and inverse trigonometric, logarithms and exponentials. Solutions of quadratic, polynomial and trigonometric equations. Partial Fractions.
Five lectures: Differentiation. Definition. Standars Derivatives. Product, quotient and 'function of a function' rules. Stationary points. [Higher derivatives?]
Six lectures: Integration. Definition as reverse of differentiation. Definite integrals and areas under curves. Standard integrals. Integration by substitution (u=f(x)). Integration by parts. Integration by partial fractions.
Four lectures: Series.Arithmetic, geometric and binomial series. Infinite series and convergence. Taylor and Maclaurin.

Arrangements

This is a first semester course for students in the Foundation Year.

All students attend two lectures per week. These run from week 1 to week 12 (except week 6).
