Submission: 2004, March 12.

Abstract:
Counterexamples are given to the uniformity conjecture. This involves constructing short exp-log expressions which define extremely small non zero numbers. This presents a problem for exact computation with numbers which may occur in scientific computing.

Mathematics Subject Classification (2000): 11J68.

Keywords and Phrases: exact computation, uniformity conjecture, witness conjecture, zero recognition, algebraic approximation.
