You may have a definite career in mind when you come to Manchester as a postgraduate, but most students are unsure of the eventual career that they will follow. Studying for a postgraduate mathematics degree allows you to keep many options open while you discover your strengths and find out more about specific careers.

Calculating Careers is an annual employment event for undergraduate and postgraduate students within The School of Mathematics at The University of Manchester. The inaugural event took place in October 2008 and was attended by over 400 maths students, with more than twenty companies and professional bodies taking stands within the School's bespoke Alan Turing Building. Alongside the opportunity for students to network with representatives present on the day, they were also offered talks and panel discussions on a variety of subjects by guests of the many companies in attendance as well as members of the University’s Careers Service.

The first Calculating Careers event included representatives from Goldman Sachs, IBM, the IMA, Thales, NAG, the Actuarial Placement Company, and Accenture, to name but a few. Future events will continue to showcase the best in graduate opportunities from some of the largest and most experienced employers in their relevant sector. We also aim to highlight the diversity of opportunities available to graduates with the unique skills and competencies that a mathematics degree confers.

We also work closely with the University Careers Service which provides valuable assistance to our students in exploring the jobs market. Employers specifically target the University of Manchester and our students leading to the largest programme of on-campus interviews and careers fairs in the UK. The University of Manchester Careers Service has been voted the best careers service in the UK by the Association of Graduate Recruiters for five consecutive years. The Careers Service website includes a section dedicated to postgraduate students, and the Careers team organise a wide range of courses and events, including the PhD & Researchers Careers Day, and also have advisors who specialise in providing careers guidance and advice to postgraduate students.
