Goals

This MSc programme has two goals

Course structure

Eight taught modules are taken worth a total of 120 credits.

From June until September, students work on a dissertation worth 60 credits. Usually students choose a topic from industrial modelling, fluid dynamics, wave phenomenon, inverse problems, image processing, finite element methods, numerical solution of differential equations, numerical linear algebra, dynamical systems, or numerical optimisation. Dissertations are normally supervised by a member of staff in the Applied Mathematics group.

A list of recent dissertations is available online.

Industrial sponsors

The industrial sponsors are involved with dissertation project sponsorship, providing guest lectures, and advising on ciriculum development. In addition, NAG sponsor a prize for the best performing students in the numerical analysis modules.

These companies will be providing sponsorship for students willing to work on projects of relevance to the activity of the organization. The amounts of such bursaries will be up to £3000 and will be awarded on a competitive basis. Projects are available for the general Applied Mathematics MSc and both Industrial modelling and Numerical Analysis pathways.

If you are interested in applying for such sponsorship then please fill in this form and upload with your application. In most cases decisions will be made in the June prior to the start of the MSc although in some exceptional cases a decision will be made immediately.

Admissions

This MSc course is suitable for mathematically well qualified graduates. Many of our students have an undergraduate degree in mathematics, others come from physics and engineering backgrounds and others join after working in industry for a time.

The programme starts in September and lasts one year. Part time students are welcomed.

Please also remember to upload your sponsorship application form if you wish to be considered for such funding.
