I am passionate about our graduates finding rewarding and interesting employment that uses the skills and knowledge they have developed.

 

How would you summarise your research to undergraduates?

We make 3D images of the insides of things from external measurements. Applications include medical imaging, oil exploration, materials science, land mine detection, airport security. Mathematically we find functions from their integrals along lines, or we find variable coefficients in partial differential equations from over specified boundary data. We use numerical analysis, differential geometry, functional analysis and statistics to solve important real world problems. Our activities span proving abstract mathematical theorems to working closely with engineers, scientists and doctors.

I am also the "Maths Careers Czar", and I am passionate about our graduates finding rewarding and interesting employment that uses the skills and knowledge they have developed. Mathematics and the logical and quantitative skills developed in a maths degree are essential to the health of the economy.
