Senior Lecturer in Statistics

Alexander Donev

I enjoy the opportunity to be able to inspire young people to develop as good scientists.

How would you summarise your research?

I am interested in developing and applying new statistical methods for designing and analysing experiments. There are many areas of science where experimentation is the preferred way of finding out new truths, and my research allows me to contribute to such discoveries.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

I enjoy the opportunity to be able to inspire young people to develop as good scientists.

How do you make your teaching up-to-date, innovative and inspirational?

It is my broad interest in statistics, and in particular in my research area, that motivates me to follow novel research as it is published.

What do you enjoy most about research?

The opportunity to use statistics to influence the development of other sciences.

What have been the highlights of your career?

I am a co-author of two internationally influential books on the theory of experimental design, they seem to be the most referenced texts in this research field.

When a student completes their course, what for you are the measures of success?

I am satisfied when the capable students say something like 'it is a shame that there were not more students on this course' – this has happened!
